If you love the gritty writing, crime solving, and imperfect characters in the Hangman’s Shadow series, you’ll love The Detective McDaniel Thrillers!
I love to share series with you that I loved. If you love what I write, why wouldn’t you love what I love? This one is one of my auto-buy series.
I think you may not have heard of this author before… But I’ve been plowing through these books and anxiously awaiting each new release. Even going back to damn kindle to get his books when they come out. (I also have to confess I saw one of his questions on the Trauma Fiction group and I didn’t answer it! I covered my eyes because I don’t want spoilers but now I’m waiting!!!!) While there’s a more central character to this story, unlike the full trio of Jesse, Cindy, and Georgia, there is still definitely a full cast of characters all working toward that common goal. So if you love the interaction of the women of Nash Investigations I think you’ll love this crime fighting unit, too.
The Detective McDaniel Thriller series by Axel Blackwell follows homicide detective Darren McDaniel, a determined but troubled investigator whose cases pull him deep into the darker corners of crime. Beginning with Hold Back the Night, the series traces McDaniel’s work through a succession of intense investigations involving violent crime, organized criminal networks, and high-stakes missing-person cases. Darren is a deeply flawed character, but easy to follow, like and root for. Along the way, he partners with fellow detectives such as Brent Vanderwyk and others in his department, forming a team that must navigate both brutal crimes and the personal consequences of the job. The characters are all very well developed, and if you’re my reader, you probably need that. This four books series follows the team taking on cases ranging from gruesome unidentified victims to kidnappings and organized crime conspiracies, all while exploring McDaniel’s own struggles with mistakes, redemption, and the relentless pressure of police work.
What I loved: Blackwell’s brisk, clean storytelling and gritty realism. The books move quickly. Even when you get a chance to breathe, you don’t. Because you’re smart and you know better. Blackwell also lines up some serious moral dilemmas that force McDaniel to question his own judgment. This is definitely hard-edged crime fiction, and this series delivers! It kept me up well past my bedtime. Nah! I don’t have a bedtime!
