So you’ve read The Martian…where you do go next?
(Or maybe you’ve read one of these other books and definitely should read the Martian next!)
First, why did readers love The Martian so much? It comes down to a few key factors… probably. I mean some people loved it because other people told them to. But as a seasoned thriller and sci-fi reader, you should make your own decisions. Here are some top options.
It’s a stunning and brilliant survival story – Readers enjoy watching Astronaut Mark Whatney engineer creative solutions to impossible situations – like growing food on Mars or fixing life-support systems.
Realistic science that’s still exciting – much of the story is based on real physics, chemistry, and space engineering. The science feels believable while still driving a thrilling plot.
Teamwork from multiple sources and characters – The story shows scientists and astronauts on Earth and in orbit working together to save him, including agencies like NASA.
In short, it’s got hard science, clever problem-solving, a relatable hero and high-stakes survival – all of which makes the story incredibly entertaining… with some education on the side.
If those are your jam, I have two books that you should love just as much.
STATION BREAKER – by Andrew Mayne
This one has a lot of similarities to The Martian on the surface, but it has more nefarious underpinnings and … dare I say, I thought the writing itself was a little better! David Dixon’s is having a really bad day at work. His first space mission goes wrong and it does it pretty damn fast. Abandoned in space he’ll have to save himself and figure out who sabotaged him and why. Though he’s out there mostly alone, he does have a team back on terra firma and I liked them as much as I liked Dixon. This is book 1 of a duet and you’ll want to read straight through book 2.
“Great characters, lots of tech, and a wild ride. you’ll get through this quick, but it’s a ton of fun.” – ★★★★★
Station Breaker is in Kindle Unlimited right now, or available on Amazon.
RESONANCE – By AJ Scudiere
(Yes my book. But you’re here on my blog. So if you read this one and liked it, you should go read the other two. Go.)
While this story occurs on Earth, it has that whole checklist of what people love about the other two. In this case, the team is four scientists, each pulling a different thread in an environmental collapse. As they pull harder, they run into each other, each looking at different side of the problem. The basis of the story is a theory out of Harvard, and this is definitely my wheelhouse. Two CDC investigators, a geologist and an environmental biologist will have to work together to figure out how to save humanity. This one is a standalone, but several of the characters pop up in future series. Readers like Resonance for its “well-developed characters and excellent writing.”
“Deserves 6/5 stars, but since the scale is 1-5, it gets a 5/5! cements Scudiere as a top talent in the genre!” – ★★★★★
Resonance is available on Kobo (free in Kobo Plus) and at Google Books as well as other places books are sold
